History

The Houston Friendship Centre Society sits on Wet'sewut'en territory. Traditionally,
Houston was a meeting place. The current friendship centre buildings sit on land
originally occupied by the Laksilyu (Small Frog) clan. For more information on the
Wet'sewut'en people, check out The Office of the Wet'sewut'en website.

History of the Friendship Centre Movement

The friendship Centre movement began in the mid 1950's to help aboriginal people
with their transition to urban living. In 1972 friendship centre's were formally
recognized by the Canadian government and the National Association of Friendship
Centres (NAFC) was formed. For more information check out the NAFC website.
